Royal Mail’s published peak surcharge period begins on 2 November 2026 and continues through 10 January 2027, inclusive. Its 2026 pricing notice identifies the change for business account customers. Sellers should check the service and purchasing route before changing their shipping budgets.
Which bookings are affected?
The UK section of Royal Mail’s surcharge schedule lists the covered products and excludes non-contract business and consumer parcel services, as well as items within the Universal Service Obligation. The name on a parcel label alone is therefore not enough to determine whether this charge applies.
Selected UK contract-service charges
These are peak additions per item from the published schedule, before VAT. They are not complete postage prices.
| Product | Peak addition per item |
|---|---|
| Tracked 48 Letterboxable | 10p |
| Tracked 48 parcels | 15p |
| Tracked 24 parcels | 22p |
| Express48 Large | £5.00 |
The full schedule includes other services. In particular, do not substitute the Letterboxable figure for a parcel rate. Royal Mail describes the peak addition as applied after discounts, commissions or other surcharges and before VAT.
What the figures mean for a seller
As a simple calculation, 100 qualifying Tracked 48 parcels at 15p each would add £15 before VAT. That example isolates the peak addition: it does not calculate the complete shipping invoice, other charges or any customer-specific arrangement.
Our practical recommendation is to review shipping rules by product rather than applying a single percentage increase across every order. Keep the base rate, seasonal addition and other invoice lines separate so that you can explain any change to your team.
Three checks before Monday’s dispatch
- Identify the buying route. Are you using a direct business contract, a non-contract service or a third-party booking provider? Ask the provider what its quoted total includes.
- Match the exact product. Check the invoice or booking service description, rather than relying on a broad courier name.
- Review your own pricing rules. Recalculate the products you actually use, then decide whether a change to customer-facing delivery prices is necessary.
Avoid adding a separate fee merely because another seller has mentioned one. Confirm the cost that applies to your own booking first. Accurate packed dimensions also remain useful when selecting services: see our Royal Mail packing, weighing and measuring checklist.
Keep the dates and scope separate
This article reports an already-published upcoming change, checked on 1 November 2026. It does not claim Royal Mail announced the surcharge today. The pricing notice gives the peak period separately from earlier price changes, and the detailed surcharge page supplies the applicable products and exclusions.
