For an eligible FedEx package in the US, open tracking, select Manage Delivery and then Hold at Location to request pickup at an available location. Wait for the ready notification before traveling. FedEx says it holds packages for up to seven days before returning them to the shipper. FedEx Hold at Location instructions.
Requesting a hold is the first step
FedEx distinguishes Hold for Pickup arranged before shipping from a redirect requested after dispatch. The options available can depend on the shipment and the shipper’s restrictions. Use only the controls offered for your package. FedEx’s explanation of holds and redirects.
Our recommendation is to save the request confirmation with the tracking reference. Check that the chosen location suits the person who will collect, rather than selecting a familiar store name without checking its address.
Wait until the package is ready
A parcel at a local facility still needs to be processed before collection. FedEx tells recipients to wait for a notification confirming that it is ready. Location hours vary. FedEx pickup timing guidance.
Before leaving home, check the latest message and the exact pickup location. If the package was redirected after a missed delivery, use the current instructions rather than assuming it is at the facility nearest your address.
Prepare identification
Bring government-issued photo ID and your tracking details. If the ID address differs from the package label, FedEx describes additional matching-address evidence such as a utility bill or statement. Read the full list and requirements for your situation. FedEx identification requirements.
For someone collecting on your behalf or a package with an adult-signature requirement, check the specific instructions first. Do not assume that forwarding an order email alone authorizes collection.
Understand the retail pickup location
FedEx’s participating-location FAQ says there is no additional fee for picking up or dropping off a package at those locations. Collection hours follow the individual retailer’s operation and vary by site. Package-related problems should go to FedEx customer support. FedEx retail-location FAQs.
Plan collection promptly rather than treating the maximum holding period as a recommended waiting time. Keep the message until the package is safely collected.
A short checklist before the trip
- Find the tracking reference and confirmed pickup location.
- Check for a ready notification and the stated collection instructions.
- Check opening hours for that location.
- Prepare the required ID and any additional address evidence.
- After collection, match the package label to the expected order.
This is an editorial checklist. If a hold option is missing, the package is not ready or the instructions are unclear, use official support with the shipment reference. A request does not establish that a change has been completed.
