USPS Package Pickup lets US senders request free collection of eligible prepaid parcels during regular mail delivery. Your address and the packages must qualify. It does not reserve a specific collection time. Start with the USPS pickup eligibility guidance before choosing it for an order.
Free pickup or a paid time window?
USPS distinguishes collection during the regular delivery round from Pickup on Demand, a paid service offering a two-hour window. Free collection can be convenient when you can prepare the package in advance and do not need a chosen time. USPS domestic shipping instructions.
Check the mail class and postage
The pickup FAQ lists Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, eligible returns and specified international services. Postage must already be paid. For international packages, online completion of the label, customs forms and payment is required. Not every address is eligible. USPS eligibility and preparation conditions.
Stamped mailpieces over 10 oz or over half an inch thick must be presented at a Post Office counter. For Priority Mail Express with a particular guarantee requirement, USPS directs customers to an acceptance employee and advises checking local cutoffs. Confirm these conditions before leaving a parcel out. USPS counter-presentation exceptions.
Prepare a pickup without losing track of orders
- Finish packing before purchasing postage. Weigh the complete parcel and check its dimensions.
- Choose the appropriate service, pay postage and attach the correct label.
- Use the official USPS pickup form to check the address and available date.
- Give clear instructions for the package location and retain your request confirmation.
- Check the outcome before telling a buyer that USPS has taken possession.
USPS recommends a kitchen or postal scale and says to include all packaging. A printed label does not remove the need for an accurate weight or the correct service packaging. USPS preparation and postage advice.
Convert centimeters before entering inch measurements
If your ruler shows centimeters, use the parcel length converter to put each outside dimension into inches before using a booking form that asks for inches. For example, enter 30.48, choose Centimeters as the starting unit and Inches as the result unit. The tool displays 12.0000 inches. Use positive measurements and apply the selected service’s own measurement-rounding rules afterward. Conversion alone does not check parcel eligibility or calculate postage. OSHA’s measurement reference gives 1 inch as 2.54 centimeters. Source checked on 7 November 2026.
A simple dispatch record for small sellers
Our recommendation is to keep the pickup request separate from the carrier’s acceptance record. They describe different stages of the dispatch process.
| Record | Why keep it? |
|---|---|
| Order and tracking reference | Match each parcel to the correct customer. |
| Requested pickup date and location | Check what you actually arranged. |
| Confirmation and any follow-up | Continue an enquiry without reconstructing the request. |
| Observed collection or tracking event | Give the buyer a factual dispatch update. |
If a parcel remains where you left it, first check the requested date, location and confirmation. Use official USPS support with those details. Avoid starting a second dispatch or buying another label before establishing what happened to the first shipment.
