Missed a Royal Mail delivery? Check the card and tracking first: Royal Mail says it automatically tries again the next working day. If that does not suit you, use its official redelivery page to check available alternatives. A missed attempt is different from a parcel that has never entered the delivery network.

Automatic redelivery or a booking?

Royal Mail’s current page offers free redelivery to your own address, another address in your postcode area, a local Post Office, or an eligible Royal Mail Shop or Parcel Locker. It requires 48 working hours’ notice for a booked redelivery. That booking notice is separate from the automatic next-working-day attempt.

Choose an option around when someone can actually receive or collect the item. For example, if you will be away again, simply expecting another home attempt may leave the same problem unresolved. Check the choices shown for the specific parcel before changing your plans.

Keep the holding deadline in view

The published retention period is 18 days before return to sender; a redelivery date must fall within 18 days of availability for collection at the Customer Service Point. Special Delivery Guaranteed and signature-required international items cannot be redelivered to another address. Signature items are excluded from Parcel Lockers, and AGE/ID variants from Shops and Lockers. Check the full conditions for your service.

A simple decision checklist

What you needWhat to check before acting
Another attempt at homeThe card, current tracking and whether the automatic attempt suits you.
A different dayThe booking choices, working-hours notice and retention deadline.
Collection insteadThe confirmed collection location, opening hours and current identification instructions.
Another local addressWhether your item and the proposed address are eligible.
Help after an unsuccessful redeliveryThe booking confirmation and latest tracking event, rather than only the original card.

This is our planning checklist, not a promise that every option is available for every parcel. Use the official page’s collection and identification instructions before travelling.

What if tracking says “Pending”?

Royal Mail’s Pending explanation says the status can reflect missing scan information. After a missed delivery, the parcel may be awaiting collection or redelivery, or be in the return-to-sender process. The status alone does not establish its exact location.

Read the event history alongside the card. A useful enquiry says when delivery was attempted, whether you booked a new date and what the latest event shows. Avoid assuming that another customer’s forum report describes your shipment.

Before you book or visit

  1. Keep the parcel reference and card together. Match them to the right order if you are waiting for several deliveries.
  2. Decide whether you need delivery or collection. Check the official options before asking someone else to travel.
  3. Save the booking confirmation and record the chosen date and destination.
  4. Review tracking again before a collection trip. If the information conflicts, ask for clarification using the help links on the redelivery page.

Advice for online sellers

Our recommendation is to reply with the customer’s actual tracking event and the official redelivery link. Keep the order enquiry open until you understand the outcome; a missed attempt and a completed delivery are different events. Do not promise a replacement, refund or new carrier delivery date solely from a “Pending” label.
